baess@bc.edu
Sinwoo is a third year doctoral student at the Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology program. Prior to starting at BC, she received her Ed.M. in Language & Literacy at Harvard University and a B.A. in English Language Education at Korea University. Sinwoo’s research broadly centers around exploring motivational conflicts that adolescents and young adults experience in the pursuit of multiple goals and how those conflicts can be resolved through self-regulatory mechanisms. Currently, she’s looking into compulsive social media use as a context of interest. Ultimately, she hopes to develop tools/interventions to help learners better understand, monitor, and regulate their motivations, emotions, and behaviors.
Soyoung Kim
soyoung.kim.3@bc.edu
Soyoung is a fourth-year doctoral student in the ADEP Program. She received her M.A. in Educational Psychology from Seoul National University and a B.A. at the Seoul National University of Education. Soyoung is interested in how teachers’ metamotivational beliefs influence student motivation through their motivational strategies. She is also interested in how teachers’ metamotivational beliefs are associated with their own teaching motivation, such as teacher self-efficacy or job satisfaction. Currently, she is also investigating the impact of STEM professors’ grading policies on college students’ motivation levels.
Rosie Rohrs (she/her)
rohrsr@bc.edu
Rosie is a fourth-year doctoral student in the ADEP Program. She previously earned an M.A. in Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University and a B.A. in Psychology and Political Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also interested in using intensive longitudinal data analysis to better understand how people work toward multiple goals in their day-to-day lives.
Cate Schultz
schultcg@bc.edu
Cate Schultz is passionate about play, children’s mental health, and science learning. She majored in Psychology and Human Development and Family Science, with a minor in Conflict Management, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her previous research experience at the University of Cambridge PEDAL Center and the UNC Neurocognition and Imaging Research Lab focused on play as a coping method for children enduring adversity. She is interested in researching how to strengthen children’s self-esteem, self-efficacy, and motivation in STEM through evidence-based interventions.
Vishal Easwar
easwarv@bc.edu
Vishal is a first-year doctoral student in the ADEP Program. He received his B.S. in Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Vishal is broadly interested in exploring the intersection between educational psychology, cognitive psychology, and educational neuroscience to understand how students’ motivational beliefs interact with their metacognitive processes to influence their self-regulated learning. He is also interested in untangling the dynamic effects that educators’ own motivational beliefs and teaching practices have on students
Research Assistants
Kate Stone
stonekq@bc.edu
Kate is a fourth-year undergraduate student studying Applied Psychology and Human Development at Boston College. Her research interests include the intersection between philosophical inquiry and motivation quality, how one’s relationships, ontologies of their relationships, and broader sociopolitical forces can impact one’s metamotivational confidence. Particularly drawn to qualitative forms of inquiry, Kate is interested in the narratives people construct about their own motivational capacities, and how labels—both self-assigned and externally prescribed—can affect their metamotivational experiences, including the unconscious impacts of categorization.
